What makes good outdoor clothing?
There is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes – we all know the saying. But what exactly makes good outdoor clothing?Basically, functional clothing should protect you from the weather, be comfortable to wear and, last but not least, look good.
Depending on the outdoor activity, the individual items of clothing have to meet different requirements. This is achieved through the use of different materials, which are always precisely tailored to the respective application.
Some functional textiles offer particularly good protection against rain and wind, while others offer excellent protection against cold, snow and ice. Wearing comfort also plays a decisive role, especially when it comes to hiking clothing. Trekking clothing should therefore always be breathable and quick-drying.
The onion principle
In general, it is advisable to use the layering principle when it comes to outdoor clothing. By wearing several layers of clothing made of different materials, you can react flexibly to changing weather conditions and temperature fluctuations.Sudden changes in the weather are not uncommon, especially when hiking in the mountains or on the coast. Using multiple layers of clothing allows you to quickly adapt to changing conditions by adding or removing a layer. The onion skin principle is therefore ideal for effectively dissipating sweat and body heat and at the same time being able to react flexibly to weather changes and sudden cold weather.
Basically, you should rely on at least three different layers of clothing: The base layer (first layer), the mid layer (second layer) and the outer layer (third layer).
The base layer, i.e. the bottom layer, lies directly on the skin and should be made of moisture-regulating functional materials such as e.g. B. merino wool or specially designed synthetic fibers. The task of the base layer is to regulate body temperature and remove excess moisture. Since this underwear layer lies directly on the skin, a comfortable fit and good workmanship without annoying seams is particularly important here.
The mid layer, also known as the thermal layer, is mainly responsible for temperature compensation. Depending on the outdoor activity, this insulation layer should be thicker or thinner. Several sub-layers can also be useful. Fleece jackets or softshell vests are popular items of clothing here.
The outer layer (outer shell) is in direct contact with the prevailing weather conditions and has the task of protecting you from rain, snow, wind and cold. Wind- and water-repellent materials that are breathable at the same time are used here. This prevents the penetration of moisture and cold, while sweat and body heat can be transported away unhindered.
Softshell vs Hardshell - What's the difference?
If you are looking for suitable outdoor clothing, you will probably have already come across the terms softshell and hardshell. But what exactly is behind the two terms?Softshell materials should always be used when freedom of movement and breathability are key. Many softshell jackets and pants also provide excellent protection against wind and also to a certain extent against rain and snow. They are therefore ideal for trekking excursions and hiking tours where no heavy rain or extreme snowfall is to be expected.
Hardshell materials really come into their own in extreme weather conditions. They have windproof and water-repellent surfaces that can withstand high water columns or heavy snowfalls. At the same time, the use of breathable membranes ensures that excess body heat and moisture can be dissipated.
