Sleeping Bags

Sleeping Bags
A sleeping bag is like a second home when you're on the go, whether on a short vacation or a longer adventure. Finding the right sleeping bag is not always easy because the selection is huge. Mummy sleeping bag or blanket sleeping bag, summer sleeping bag made of synthetic fiber, a down sleeping bag or a lightweight sleeping bag for a tour in the mountains? Or would you rather have a bivouac bag for your survival tour?

We stock sleeping bags from well-known manufacturers such as Carinthia, Ferrino, Outwell, Robens, Origins Outdoors and many more. It's worth reading a little about the use and properties of the individual sleeping bags. And of course, in addition to the intended use, the temperature range and the size, the design also plays a role. A good sleeping bag should always be complemented by a sleeping mat, then sleeping on the go is perfect!

Anchor bivouac bag

Bivouac bags are all-rounders and are often used as a short-term replacement for a tent. The weight of the Biwi is just as minimalist as the comfort. If you have to set up camp outdoors unplanned, i.e. set up a so-called bivouac, we have a few tips:

  • The first choice in such situations is a bivouac bag. This is windproof and protects against both rain and snow. The mostly reflective inside keeps the heat on the body. When turned upside down (silver reflective side on the outside), the bivouac bag can also protect against extreme heat.
  • Find a place that is protected from wind. In the mountains you should not lie down on sloping snowfields as bivouac bags can quickly slip. Make sure there are no loose branches or stones above you.
  • But never lie down in dry stream or river beds, this could be life-threatening. Lie down so that the wind cannot penetrate the bivouac bag.
  • Place your luggage or backpack next to your face to protect it.
  • It's best to store clothing in the bivouac bag, as long as it fits there fairly easily and you still have enough space. This clothing helps to form air chambers, which have an insulating effect.
  • To warm up the bivouac bag quickly, it helps to breathe into it.
  • However, never close the bivouac bag completely when you are lying in it so that the oxygen supply is guaranteed.
  • Take your provisions with you in the bivouac bag. A bivouac bag is also an aid for caring for injured people or transporting them. In an emergency, simply cut open the bivouac bag and use it like a rescue blanket.

Down sleeping bag

Down sleeping bags are filled with down feathers from ducks and/or geese. The thermal performance of these sleeping bags is extremely good, they are very comfortable to sleep in and the sleeping bag absorbs body moisture - which is why down is the preferred filling of a sleeping bag for many people. Lightweight sleeping bags are often filled with down because the pack size is smaller and down can be easily compressed. A down sleeping bag must be regularly ventilated, dried and then shaken. If the down sleeping bag doesn't get wet all the time and is well cared for, it will have a very long lifespan!

How do you wash a down sleeping bag?

  • Basically, you should wash the down sleeping bag as rarely as possible. If necessary, use the washing machine!
  • The sleeping bag is washed in a large washing machine, please DO NOT use a top loader!
  • The maximum water temperature should be 30 °C. Please only use down or mild detergent, but only a third of the usual amount.
  • The sleeping bag is rinsed thoroughly at least 5 times, then the water is squeezed out or spun for a maximum of 20 seconds, DO NOT wring!

Drying instructions

  • The sleeping bag can be tumble dried at a maximum of 30 °C.
  • Use two dryer balls or tennis balls to spread the down evenly and keep the sleeping bag soft.
  • You can also spread the sleeping bag out on a flat surface to dry.
  • NEVER hang the sleeping bag up to dry, otherwise the feathers will clump!
  • To extend the life of your sleeping bag, a ticking is recommended. Individual stains can also be easily rubbed out with lukewarm soapy water and a sponge; light dirt can be rubbed out with a stiff brush. This saves you from having to wash the sleeping bag too much.

Blanket sleeping bag

Thanks to its special shape, there is plenty of space in the blanket sleeping bag. Overall it is very wide and comfortable. The sleeping bag can also be opened completely using a zipper and used as a blanket. You can turn around in it or put your feet up without it getting tight. However, the blanket sleeping bag has more weight and more volume than the mummy shape and poorer thermal performance with a comparable weight. Blanket sleeping bags are mostly used for camping in summer.

Tickings

Ticking is another term for inner sleeping bag. This protects the sleeping bag and only the lining is washed after use. This means the outer sleeping bag retains its loft and insulating properties for longer. Tickings are available in various materials such as cotton, silk, blended fabrics or fleece. They are therefore very variable when it comes to temperature design (sleeping bag + ticking = higher temperature in the sleeping bag). You can also use a ticking as a guest sleeping bag or summer sleeping bag.

Synthetic fiber sleeping bag

The synthetic fiber sleeping bag is a very good alternative to down and has many advantages. New materials have made sleeping bags made of synthetic fiber lighter. The synthetic fibers cope well with changing weather conditions and are forgiving of moisture from outside. They keep you warm even when wet. They are available in every shape and size, even for special target groups, for example as children's sleeping bags or women's sleeping bags. The financial aspect also plays a role, as synthetic fibre sleeping bags are often cheaper than the down version.

Mummy sleeping bag

The mummy shape is the classic form of sleeping bag, slim cut and with a hood. Due to its close-fitting shape, it offers slightly better insulation values than the blanket sleeping bag. Due to its smaller pack size and lower weight, the mummy is more suitable for trekking and hiking, boat and bike tours. Some mummy sleeping bags are equipped with a footmuff, all of which have an anatomically optimised head and foot area.

Outdoor pillow / travel pillow

An outdoor pillow is part of perfect comfort when travelling. Whether as a camping pillow, travel pillow or neck pillow - a pillow makes the equipment perfect. These cushions are usually inflatable or can be packed up small. There is also a large selection here, so you can choose between different shapes and materials.
